Republicans are waking up happy this morning.G-O-P candidates took home 2 governors' seats held by Democrats in Tuesday's election. Now, the Democrats may need to re-strategize before next year's mid-term elections.CBS News Correspondent Whit Johnson reports from Washington.(nats: McDonnell victory) (Richmond, VA)If last night's Republican sweep was any indication... Democrats may have their work cut out for them in 2010.Bob McDonnell say, "I AM READY TO WORK TO SERVE YOU TO HELP LEAD VIRGINIA FOR THE NEXT 4 YEARS." (applause)For the first time in eight years, Virginia voters elected a GOP candidate as their new governor. Attorney General Bob McDonnell cruised to a landslide victory over Democrat Creigh (CREE) Deeds. But the big shocker came in the country's other gubernatorial race --Chris Christir ksays, "HEY NEW JERSEY, WE DID IT!!"Former federal prosecutor Chris Christie snagged the governor's seat in New Jersey becoming the first Republican to do so in more than a decade.... and beating out incumbent Jon Corzine.Jon Corzine says, "WE WILL WORK HARD TOGETHER TO MAKE SURE THAT THE TRANSITION IS SMOOTHE, AND THAT WE WILL BE ABLE TO SERVE THE PEOPLE OF THIS GREAT STATE."Whit Johnson says, "PRESIDENT OBAMA HIT THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL HIMSELF TO TRY TO GIVE DEEDS *AND* CORZINE AN EXTRA BOOST. DESPITE THE DOUBLE LOSSES, MORE THAN HALF OF VOTERS IN BOTH STATES SAID THE PRESIDENT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THEIR DECISION.Steve Chaggaris says,"I THINK TO SAY IT'S A REFERENDUM SPECIFICALLY ON PRESIDENT OBAMA IS A BIT OF A STRETCH."It was one year ago today a record number of voters carried President Obama to HIS historic victory. But they didn't all turn out this time around.(SOT: Steve Chaggaris/CBS News Political Director) 1:20-1:26"THE PEOPLE WHO CAME OUT TO VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA IN 2008 -- YOUNG PEOPLE AND AFRICAN AMERICANS -- JUST WERE NOT THERE."The key now for Democrats may be RE-ENERGIZING those voters in time for next year's midterm elections. For Republicans... it'll be HOLDING ON to the momentum.Whit Johnson, CBS News, Washington.
