Holiday Travel Safety Tips

It looks like the weather will cooperate for holiday travelers this Fourth of July...And law enforcement officials are reminding drivers to think safety when out on the roads.News 12's Carly Aplin has more.Following one of the deadliest Memorial Day weekends ever... authorities are stepping up enforcement to avoid any Fourth of July tragedies.Sgt. Jaci Sticha says, "They're going to focus on traffic and the events surrounding and where the most potential is for harm or hazard and that's going to be on the roads, fireworks... please heed the warnings that are out there for all of these things."Triple A estimates over 37 million travelers will take to the roads this holiday weekend and authorities say this can be one of the busiest times of the year ... a combination that can be a recipe for disaster.Sgt. Jaci Sticha says, "When we have people that are distracted, which is the number one cause of crashes... tired, angry and in a hurry, we have a recipe for possible disaster."Agencies throughout Minnesota will be stepping up enforcement... but say policing yourself is the best way to stay safe... They're encouraging people to buckle up, pay attention and don't drink and drive.Sgt. Jaci Sticha says, "We're not focusing on those things to be the bad guy, we're focusing on it to keep our citizens safe and happy."Because safe and happy citizens make for a safe and happy Independence Day.In Mankato, Carly Aplin, News 12.
